UCD hosts European veterinary workshop
Associate Professor Kieran Meade, recently hosted the European Veterinary Immunology Workshop (EVIW) 2024 in Dublin.
Our shared COVID-19 experience has taught us that the outbreak of a disease in almost any species or anywhere in the world can have a global impact within a very short space of time for humankind and therefore all efforts to control infectious diseases should be pursued with collective urgency. Sustainability of livestock production systems also require innovative new solutions to promote animal health.

It is in that context that UCD, led by Associate Professor Kieran Meade, recently hosted the European Veterinary Immunology Workshop (EVIW) 2024 in Dublin.
We are facing an age of unprecedented opportunity and challenge, including issues regarding zoonoses, antimicrobial stewardship and environmental protection. The veterinary and animal science community are a therefore critical cog in the One Health response to these issues and training the next generation of graduates in these areas is critical.

The programme for the 3-day workshop, held at the Crowne Plaza Dublin Airport, was underpinned by seven keynote lectures given by world class speakers from Ireland, UK, Switzerland, USA and Canada, alongside parallel oral and poster presentation sessions delivered by early- & mid-career researchers working in the fields of veterinary immunology, epidemiology, diagnostics and vaccinology, from across Europe and beyond.

The workshop culminated in a closing panel session facilitated by Dr Simon Doherty, a One Health advocate based at Queen’s University Belfast – from this, a report will be generated on future direction for the workshop sponsors, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), an international organisation that works closely with policy makers, stakeholders and citizens to establish evidence-based international standards and to find solutions to social, economic and environmental challenges.
