The Young Vet Network’s small animal CPD event at Templepatrick has become a fixture on the organisation’s annual calendar. The NIVA’s Fiona McFarland reports on the 2020 gathering.

The Young Vet Network Northern Ireland (YVN NI) – part of the North of Ireland Veterinary Association (NIVA) – had its biggest event to date with more than 100 people attending the small animal CPD event held again this year at Hilton Hotel, Templepatrick during February.

This event offers six hours of clinical CPD from excellent, highly experienced and respected speakers along with the chance to engage with the expanding trade exhibition, allowing them to gain insight into new products, initiatives and opportunities.

CPD is not the only item on the agenda, as part of the Young Vet Network we encourage those attending to build relationships and make new friendships. This is a unique opportunity to tick all the boxes and have a good day out at the same time.

Two of the speakers at Templepatrick were Aidan McAlinden, NIVS and Shane Guerin, Gilabbey Vet Hospital, Cork.

Clinical lectures from this year’s guest speakers included ‘Liver Deep – Mountain High- Delving into biochemistry’ by David Maguire, UK head of clinical pathology at Idexx; ‘Skin there, done that – Top tips for surgical wound management and reconstruction’ by Aidan McAlinden, Northern Ireland Veterinary Specialists; ‘Can’t Walk, Can’t Talk – Spinal Injuries from a practice perspective’ by Shane Guerin, Gilabbey Veterinary Hospital, Cork; ‘Itchy Business – Diagnostic approach to atopic dermatitis in dogs’ by Kathryn Cuddy, Skinvet Ireland and ‘Get off the Bottle – Does your patient want to drink or need to drink – A medical tour of the polydipsic dog’ by David Church, deputy principal, RVC.

We were also delighted to welcome a very inspiring talk from Dr Des Rice, CCO on communication – ‘How to have that difficult conversation’. Des has been hugely involved in the training and development of Vet Support NI and he had the audience gripped on how to improve our skills in speaking assertively and discussing problems with colleagues, friends and family.

YVN NI would like to thank all of our sponsors and trade exhibitors – Boehringer Ingelheim, Idexx, BVA, Lintbells, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, VSSCo, The Vet Service, Northern Ireland Veterinary Specialists, Chanelle, Duggan Veterinary Supplies, Virbac and Vetoquinol.

We are very pleased to welcome some new faces to the YVN NI team – Rachel Davies who will take up the new role as YVN representative on the NIVA Council and Mark Savage, also a recently elected NIVA council member, along with Glenda Ward and Kirsty Morrison.

We are always looking for anyone with enthusiasm to join our small committee. If anyone is keen on becoming a part of the YVN NI team, please get in touch. Either email yvn.ni@hotmail.com or contact us on our facebook page. We look forward to seeing many of you at our next event.
