Equine rehab qualification an Irish first for Esther

Dr Esther Skelly-Smith has qualified as a Certified Equine Rehabilitation Practitioner through the University of Tennessee, the only veterinarian in Ireland to achieve the qualification.

In 2017 Dr Skelly-Smith set up Ireland’s first integrated equine veterinary referral service, Shanaghan Veterinary Services, based near Banbridge.

Speaking about her latest achievement, she told NI Veterinary Today: “I am absolutely thrilled to have achieved my status as a certified equine rehabilitation practitioner.

“The course allowed me to consolidate my knowledge on the field of equine rehabilitation and be inspired by world leaders in this field like Dr Steve Adair!  I am pleased to be able to bring this additional knowledge to horse clients and vet colleagues in Ireland, with the aim of being able to improve equine welfare and performance!”

The internationally accredited veterinary chiropractor, BVMedSci(Hons) BVM BVS PCAC PgC(WVA&CPM) CERP MRCVS, also holds a postgraduate certificate in western veterinary acupuncture and chronic pain management and is an honorary lecturer with Queen’s University Belfast.

Her practice includes veterinary acupuncture, veterinary chiropractic, equine dentistry, pain management, rehabilitation, performance optimisation and laser therapy and she is also a veterinary consultant for SVS Equine which is a platform to provide evidence based equine products.
